A. Sodium bicarbonate IS what baking soda is. Two different names for the same thing. In chemistry it is also called Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate. The "bi" is an old fashion way of saying hydrogen.

Why does salicylic acid dissolve in sodium bicarbonate but not water?
Q. I had a lab where we observed salicylic acid doing nothing in water, but dissolving easily when we added sodium bicarbonate to the water. Why is the acid more soluble with sodium bicarbonate than water?
Asked by WileyII - Sun Apr 10 01:33:46 2011 - Chemistry - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Hi there! We don't expect salicylic acid to dissolve in water because it is non-polar. However, it is soluble in sodium bicarbonate solution because an acid-base reaction occurs. Sodium bicarbonate forms a basic solution and from the name itself, salicylic acid is acidic. It is acidic due to its carboxyl functional group. Sodium bicarbonate and salicylic acid actually reacts with each other in an acid-base reaction. The once salicylic acid now turns to a salt which is sodium salicylate. Sodium salicylate, as a salt, is composed of a cation (which is Na+) and of an anion (the salicylate ion). Because of the negative charge in the salicylate ion and the positive charge of Na+, water molecules in the sodium bicarbonate solution and from the… [cont.]

what is the mass of sodium bicarbobate in a unknown mixture of sodium bicarbonate and sodium chloride?
Q. ok so we started out with 1.623g of a mixture of sodium bcarbonate and sodium chloride and we heated it and lost .352g of mass from the starting weight which now makes the mass of the sample 1.271g. from this I am trying to find the total weight and percent of the sodium bicarbonate in the unknown mixture.
Asked by Roxy - Fri Feb 20 15:06:47 2009 - Chemistry - 1 Answers - Comments

A. well the heating reaction causes Na HCO3 to lose CO2 forming Na OH. Na HCO3 --- Na OH + CO2 note that 84 grams of Na HCO3 ( 1 molar mass ) will yield 44 grams of CO2 ( 1 molar mass ) so then 84/44 = 0.352/X will tell us the amount of Na HCO3 that yielded the 0.352 grams of CO2 ( the "lost" mass ) solving for X wt of Na HCO3 = 0.672 grams since the original mixture weighed 1.623 grams then Na HCO3 comprised 0.672/1.623 X 100 = 41.4 %

Q. What is the role of sodium bicarbonate in the excretory/urinary system?
Asked by Dennis L - Tue Jun 10 21:43:21 2008 - Biology - 1 Answers - Comments

A. Sodium bicarbonate can help to prevent kidney stones (renal stones). How? Bicarbonate reduces the acidity of dietary components such as proteins, so something like bicarbonate-rich mineral water could be used to prevent the recurrence of calcium oxalate and uric acid renal stones. It also plays an important role in fluid and electrolyte balance. Many oral hydration solutions contain bicarbonate, which shows how bicarbonate is useful to control water absorption in patients at risk of dehydration.

A. Baking soda and sodium bicarbonate are the same thing. Baking Powder is baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) mixed with a dry acid (cream of tartar) and other salts. I would imagine the recipe would call for baking soda... you may have used a little too much for the recipe or it has to do with baking times and temps.

A. sodium bicarbonate. Na HCO3 sodium carbonate aka washing soda Na2CO3 Not recommended. there a actually quite a lot of differences including solubility in water... sodium bicarbonate = 7.8 g/100ml vs 30 g/ 100ml for sodium carbonate. by the way, baking soda (aka sodium bicarbonate) decomposes at about 100F and above to give sodium carbonate, water, and CO2... So, you could heat some baking soda and make your own sodium carbonate...
