Philosophy

The introduction of the terms "philosopher" and "philosophy" has been ascribed to the Greek thinker Pythagoras. The ascription is said to be based on a passage in a lost work of Herakleides Pontikos, a disciple of Aristotle. It is considered to be part of the widespread body of legends of Pythagoras of this time. "Philosopher" was understood as a word which contrasted with "sophist" (from sophoi). Traveling sophists or "wise men" were important in Classical Greece, often earning money as teachers, whereas philosophers are "lovers of wisdom" and not professionals.

What is the worldly philosophy that convinces people to be enemies of God?
Q. Thanks for considering this. God bless you now. Colossians 2:8 8Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. James 4:4 4Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. shane, those who love the Lord have already read and examined the Bible with godly eyes, not with biased worldly eyes.

A. I think the teaching of evolution and the thinking that we can govern ourselves are some of the major worldly philosophies that pull people away from God. Friendship with the world... that is a difficult one for people to understand sometimes. World can mean (1) humankind as a whole, apart from their moral condition or course of life, (2) the framework of human circumstances into which a person is born and in which he lives (and in this sense it is at times quite similar to the Greek ai on , system of things ), or (3) the mass of mankind apart from God s approved servants. James 4:4 is talking about the 3rd one. Also in 1 Corinthians 15:33 it warns that our association with those that do not live a life in harmony with Bible teachings are… [cont.]

What areas of Philosophy are most and least competitive?
Q. For example: Philosophy of Religion is competitive; Philosophy of Mind/Psychology - not as competitive. What are other examples? How competitive is Philosophy of Time? Put this into context. I want a job. Should I aim towards philosophy of science or philosophy of mind, or what? Quoting Plato doesn't make you sound smart, it makes you a poser, especially if it is rather irreverent to the subject at hand.

A. By 'competitive' I'm guessing you mean "practical." Without question the most practical fields of philosophy are ethics and logic. Training in ethics can get you a job as a consultant to hospitals, businesses, etc. Training in logic can get you a job in the computer field (with some luck) Philosophy of science or mind are useful only for getting college teaching positions, but then you normally need a Ph.D in the field.
