What's my error coin worth?
Q. I have a nickel from 1990 that is hollowed out and has the entire tails side removed. The heads side is there, but where tails should be are just a bunch of circular lines. Would this be of any value to collectors?
Asked by Mel - Sat Jun 5 03:01:14 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You do not have an error coin but a damaged coin. Your item could be part of a magicians coin one side is hollowed out so another coin that is a little smaller can be put into the hole. It is used for tricks. The coin in the back of yours must have fallen out. It has no value.

Connecticut state quarter error coin value?
Q. I have a Connecticut state quarter that is off-set on the back and was hopeing that someone knew where I could find the value of it for free, I have tried to search online but dont really even know where to start. Thanks for any help.

A. The value of any coin besides the face value is determined by how many were made and by how bad someone else wants it. Some collectors might give as much as 20.00 for it while others wouldn't give 50 cents, its just a quarter to them.

A. Go to a coin dealer if it's real you will be given several options and perhaps a cash offer, if not you will be told so by someone who makes their living at knowing this info. I cannot help without seeing it, Nor can anyone else.

Asked by jacob f - Sat Dec 13 09:19:26 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. In the U.S. we have cents not pennies. The error coins are the ones that were struck using a proof die where the A and M in america have a wide space between those letters. The regular circulation strikes have the A almost touching the M. You can try www.koinpro.com that is the web site of Ken Potter a dealer and error specialist in error coins. He has a section on images.

US Mint Error Coin? Extra metal protruding from edge?
Q. I found a 1968 US Dime with extra metal protruding beyond the top edge of the coin (not to be mistaken with the rim of the coin). Dimensions of the extra metal extends about 1/16 inches around the edge and 1/32 beyond the edge. The coin is in good condition. How much is this worth? Thank You!
Asked by Kevin Lake - Mon Nov 16 13:55:01 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It could be a broadstrike, that is a coin struck outside the collar. It also could be a damaged coin that someone made outside the mint. Error coins os certain types are easy to fake. You need to take it to a coin dealer who knows error coins so he can authenticate it. You can also see if there is a coin club near you, one or more members will know error coins. A broadstruck clad dime is valued around $10 or so.

I have just found an undated 20p coin, mint error?
Q. What should I do? I heard they are worth thousands, then I looked up on ebay and they are only selling for 100-200, should I sell somewhere else? at an auction, or on an alternative online auction? or, should I wait for a few years to increase its value?
Asked by Eoin - Sun Jul 19 04:32:58 2009 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Keep it for now! It will increase in value and you will regret selling it now. The London Mint Office are currently paying 50 for them, but they are worth a lot for than that. According to this article in the daily mail one sold for over seven grand! Don't give in to temptation and sell it now, keep it!

What kind of error coin is this?
Q. It is a Jefferson nickel struck on a 3.1 gram copper planchet. I believe it was struck as a penny first because the coin has all of the motto's and the bust on the obverse and the memorial on the reverse but then it seems as if it went through nickel dies?? What is it called?
Asked by Ashkan A - Sun Apr 26 02:21:12 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It is a double denomination error. The coin would often be called a 6 cent piece. A 3.11 gram copper planchet is 95% copper and was used almost continuously from 1857 until mid 1982. The links give more information. I hope that helped.

Q. I was looking through some of my old coins that I collect and came across this quarter.. I have know clue what kind of error it is, maybe the print was to big, or just a simple machine malfunction when it was processed.. I will be greatly appreciative if you can tell me what you think, just a guess, please, you can see the coin here.. Thank You So Much...

Coin collectors. What is your favorite error coin? Whether you own it or not.?
Q. Personally, I find it funny there is such a big fuss about "factory rejects." Any other factory would have those in the recycle bin, the management would be debating a recall, or the customer service department would be busy with calls for a refund or a lawsuit. Isn't life a funny thing?
Asked by liberty 911 - Wed May 13 12:57:49 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I do not collect error coins either and to big of a deal is being made on some of them that a microscope is needed to see. it seems to be the fad today but like all fads will end with people losing money. A coin that is a so-called error coin, which is actually a doubled die and that is the 1955 doubled die, it is very dramatic. The doubled date does stick out with no need of magnification. All the state quarters with the extra trees and the DC quarter with the extra piano keys are just not my thing. I collect historic coins or ones that are a small great piece of art. To have a coin in my hand that may have been spent by Alexander the Great or may have been in Thomas Jefferson's purse is a thrill.

what is the chance of a presidential dollar coin in having an error?
Q. i have 21 coins i just want to no whats the chance?
Asked by Jason - Fri Sep 18 19:20:32 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If they are from 2007 there is a better chance in finding an error coin, but as time has gone by, they are now few and far between. The mint has learned from it's mistakes. That is not to say something may not happen in th future, but so far the so-called errors are die breaks or grease filled dies so a letter is missing and they have no added value. The neat errors are from 2007

Q. Does anybody know how much a John Adams 2007 error coin is worth?
Asked by f_alvarezsr - Thu Jul 19 23:41:40 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you sell it today, you can expect about $100 from a dealer. If you wait, years (5-10), there is no telling what the price might go to. Almost certainly it will go up, as the bulk of the error coins will be held by dealers - so the number for sale (especially on ebay) will be reduced greatly.

Asked by Brandon - Fri Jul 10 18:10:48 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If it's bigger than a quarter, then it's definitely not a nickel. It's got to be some kind of novelty coin. Does it look like a standard US nickel except for the size? What year is it? Whose picture is on it? Is anything else about it different than a standard five-cent coin? EDIT: Nickels don't HAVE ridges. Quarters do. Is there any way you can post a picture of this coin, next to a regular nickel and quarter?

How rare are error coins in US Mint Proof sets? I received a set for Christmas and 1 coin appears flawed.?
Q. The Kennedy 50 cent piece has a bright, shiny dot in the matte finish area of the neck on the profile side, pretty much in the dead center. I would say its 1-2 millimeters in diameter. I compared it to other proof sets and they do not have the spot.
Asked by Steve H - Mon Dec 29 15:11:46 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Errors are quite rare in proof sets but having a damaged coin in one is not. Though not real common defective coins do get into the sets more times than the mint likes. The shinny spot could be from grease from the minting press or an oil. You did not list a date but if a 2008 they would take it back and send another. If older than that you are stuck with it unless the person takes it back you bought it from. That is why it is wise to check all mint and proof sets. It does not ad value to your set but takes it away.

is this an error coin?
Q. i also have a dime with a gold tint to it my penny has a normal size 19 but an extremmly small 82 does this make it an error coin and if so how much is it worth oh yea and this is on the date i also have a black penny and a penny that has like a rainbowy color to it i have also found a similar small date but it's 19 small 8 normal 3 so what's the deal with this? and how do i chose best answers?
Asked by Braden - Mon Aug 10 02:30:57 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There are actually seven relatively common varieties of 1982 Lincoln Cent, but the small date types are probably more rare. The link below gives a pretty good explanation of these with methods to tell the varieties apart. There are several ways coins can change colors. The black penny is likely caused by sulfur oxide. The rainbow penny can be highly desirable. The gold tinted dime is likely a form of toning and is probably not a problem.

What would be the value of a coin with a spelling error?
Q. Chile minted the 50 peso coin with the word CHILE mis-spelled as CHIIE, I was wondering, what would the value be of a circulated coin be?
Asked by AL G - Tue Feb 16 11:01:59 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There are dozens of them on eBay. They've been selling for $50 to $100. You've got to catch the right bidder at the right time to get the $100. A 10 coin lot went for $495.Since they're from 2008, they can't be too circulated. This seems to be more of a publicity price than a rarity price, since the news came out fairly recently that the director of the Chilean mint was fired over the mistake. That news has caused a lot of interest and a surge in prices. I do not believe that the coin is all that scarce. If you have one and you want to sell it, in my opinion, get what you can for it now while interest is up.
