What are the steps to making a balanced chemical equation?
Q. Please help, I have no idea how to make a balanced chemical equation. Please show some examples and explain them each step by step. Thank you sooo much.

A. First, write out the (unbalanced) reaction: H2 + O2 --> H2O Looking at the reaction above, you have a balanced number of H's, but not O's, so you balance the O's. H2 + O2 --> 2H2O Now your O's balance, but you have twice as many H's on the right as you do on the left. Add a 2 coefficient to the H2 on the left. 2H2 + O2 --> 2H2O Now you have equal numbers of H and O atoms on both sides of this equation, and your reaction is balanced.

How can you tell if a balanced chemical equation is basic, acidic or neutral?
Q. How can you tell if a balanced chemical equation is basic, acidic or neutral?
Asked by Perfect O - Tue Sep 30 13:17:09 2008 - Chemistry - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Chemical equations are neither acidic nor basic, but you can evaluate the products of the reaction (and maybe the reactants too) and identify the existence of acids or bases which will indicate what kind of effects the reaction will have on the acidity. However, I'm not sure if you're asking the question you want to know the answer to, maybe you're wondering about balancing redox equations (which you do differently in acidic vs basic environments), in which case you'll need additional information beyond just an equation, but if the equation is redox and it's balanced just look for the presence of H+ ions or OH- ions on either side and that will tell you if it is acidic or basic (respectively), if neither is present, it'll be neutral.

How to write a balanced chemical equation giving sodium sulfate and hydrogen chloride gas?
Q. How to write a balanced equation for the reaction between sodium chloride, sulfur dioxide gas, steam, and oxygen to give sodium sulfate and hydrogen chloride gas? I think i may be reading the question wrong because everything i try is wrong! :( The way i look at it the equation would look something like this: Na Cl + SO2 +H20(g) + O2 = Na2SO4 + HCl (g) Is there any way to balance that equation or am i just way off? Please and thank you!
Asked by - Mon Aug 8 21:09:44 2011 - Chemistry - 1 Answers - Comments

A. I think your trouble was caused by forgetting the Na Cl. I would try it as a three-step process. The last step would be: 2 Na Cl + H2SO4 2 HCl + Na2SO4 Now the question becomes, where did the H2SO4 come from? I know: SO3 + H2O H2SO4 I don't remember this reaction being done with steam, but it would work. and before that: 2 SO2 + O2 2 SO3 So in order to get all this stuff to balance out: Multiply SO3 + H2O H2SO4 by 2 and multiply 2 Na Cl + H2SO4 2 HCl + Na2SO4 by 2 to get these three equations: 2 SO2 + O2 2 SO3 2 SO3 + 2 H2O 2 H2SO4 4 Na Cl + 2 H2SO4 4 HCl + 2 Na2SO4 Now add all three equations up, left sides together and right sides together: 2 SO2 + O2 + 2 SO3 + 2 H2O + 4 Na Cl + 2 H2SO4 2 SO3 + 2 H2SO4 + 4 HCl + 2 Na2SO4 Now cancel like… [cont.]

A. It is used in the normal titration calculations via this relationship. Suppose substance A reacts with substance B, then: Moles of A in eqtn/moles of B in eqtn = vol x molarity A/ vol x molarity B It is vital that the original equation is correctly balanced

Asked by tirapabi_2007 - Wed Oct 28 21:33:35 2009 - Chemistry - 1 Answers - Comments

A. Well if you're just doing Aluminum Oxide --> Aluminum + Oxygen, then: Al2O3 --> Al + O2 To make this balanced, try to understand this chart you get by breaking down the reaction. Element / # in reactant / # in product Al / 2 / 1 O / 3 / 2 So to make it balanced, you'll want to put a 2 in front of Al2O3 because O should be even. It will double everything. Al / 4 / 1 O / 6 / 2 Now put a 4 in front of the Al in the product. Al / 4 / 4 O / 6 / 2 And a 3 in front of O2. Al / 4 / 4 O / 6 / 6 There you go! 2Al[2]O[3] --> 4Al + 3O[2] [subscript]

Asked by Jon-O - Tue Oct 2 21:35:00 2007 - Chemistry - 1 Answers - Comments

A. This is a double replacement reaction. You can predict the products by "switching partners" of the positive and negative ions. Once you do that, and make sure your ionic compounds are electrically neutral, make sure you have the same number of atoms of each element on both sides of the arrow. (ex: Ni2+ bonds with OH- to form Ni(OH)2, etc.

A. A.11 3-ethylpentane is --- CH3-CH2-CH(C2H5)-CH2-CH3 or C7H16 combustion means to burn in presence of air...and as 3-3ethylpentane is an alkane... general combustion reaction of any alkane is: Cn H(2n+2) + (3n+1)/2O2 ---> n CO2 + (n+1)H2O putting n = 7 so 2n+2 = 16 (3n+1)/2 = (3 X 7 + 1)/2 = 22/2 = 11 n+1 = 8 putting the values... C7H16 + 11O2 ---> 7CO2 + 8H2O so answer is 11

A. 3 CH3CH2OH(aq) + Cr2O7^2 (aq) + 8 H^+(aq) 3 CH3C(=O)H(aq) + 2 Cr^3+(aq) + 7 H2O(l) The reaction goes from yellow to green. This is the first stage of the oxidation of alcohol in the Breathalyzer test. 3CH3CHO(aq) + Cr2O7^2-(aq) + 8 H^+(aq) 3CH3C(=O)OH(aq) + 2 Cr^3+ + SO4^2-(aq) + 4H2O(l) This is the second stage of the reaction. It is often very difficult to stop this reaction with a strong oxidizing agent like Cr2O7^2-(aq) at the 1st stage of the reaction because the aldehyde, CH3CHO, acetaldehyde, is very easily oxidized. Hope this helps you. JIL HIR

A. Not sure if there are any side reactions with your first equation. If not its CO2+4H2 --> CH4+2H20 Combustion of methane has several steps. "In the combustion of methane, several steps are involved: Methane is thought to form a formaldehyde (HCHO or H2CO). The formaldehyde gives a formyl radical (HCO), which then forms carbon monoxide (CO). The process is called oxidative pyrolysis: CH4 + O2 CO + H2 + H2O Following oxidative pyrolysis, the H2 oxidizes, forming H2O, releasing heat. This occurs very quickly, usually in significantly less than a millisecond. 2 H2 + O2 2 H2O Finally, the CO oxidizes, forming CO2 and releasing more heat. This process is generally slower than the other chemical steps, and typically requires a few to… [cont.]
